Meaning & Interpretation

The song uses the metaphor of the grifter to explore what happens when two people who have built their lives around emotional self-protection encounter someone who sees through the act. Both narrators arrived at the party planning to take what they could and leave, but recognizing a fellow hustler breaks down the very defenses they depend on. The love that results is unexpected and therefore more trustworthy — neither person was looking for it.
