Meaning & Interpretation

The song confesses that Taylor engineered her relationship's origin story — that what seemed like a chance meeting was actually a calculated move. But the confession is itself a kind of vulnerability: admitting that you are always scheming is admitting that you never trust things to happen on their own, which is admitting to a deep fear of being left to fate. The mastermind is both the schemer and the anxious person who schemes because she cannot bear uncertainty.

Personal Connection

As Midnights' closing track, 'Mastermind' reframed the entire album: every vulnerable confession that preceded it was also, perhaps, a strategic move — and the honesty about that strategy is the most vulnerable confession of all.
