The song asks why anyone would break something that was given freely and without conditions — a perfectly good heart, undamaged and full. The accusation is both naive and devastating: Taylor had not yet learned that people break hearts not because hearts are defective but because people are. The innocence of the question is the song's power, capturing a worldview that heartbreak would eventually complicate beyond recognition.
