Nashville songwriter Liz Rose was Taylor Swift's first and most important songwriting mentor. They began writing together when Taylor was just 14 years old, and Rose co-wrote many of the songs that launched Taylor's career: 'Tim McGraw,' 'Teardrops on My Guitar,' 'You Belong with Me,' and 'White Horse.' Rose has described her role as being an editor — Taylor would come in with ideas pouring out of her, and Rose would help shape and focus them. Their partnership established the confessional, narrative-driven songwriting style that would become Taylor's signature. Rose won the CMA Songwriter of the Year award in 2008, with Taylor's songs forming the core of that achievement.
