William Bowery is the songwriting pseudonym of British actor Joe Alwyn, Taylor Swift's partner from 2017 to 2023. Alwyn's songwriting contributions to Folklore and Evermore were a surprise revelation when the albums' credits were released. He co-wrote 'exile' and 'betty' on Folklore and 'champagne problems,' 'coney island,' and 'evermore' on Evermore — all piano-driven songs with an intimate, confessional quality. Taylor revealed on the Long Pond Studio Sessions that Alwyn had written the piano part for 'exile' and that 'betty' grew from a guitar riff he played. Though their relationship ended before The Tortured Poets Department, the songs they wrote together remain among the most beloved in Taylor's catalog.
